Protein & the Body

Protein and the body: illness, ageing and repair

Most protein writing stops at the label. This section starts where the food ends: what the body does with protein once it is inside, and what happens to that arrangement when someone is ill, immobile or older.

A label question has an answer. A body question usually has a mechanism, a range, and a boundary past which nobody has measured anything. These pages are written for the second kind: they set out what the physiology is understood to do, name the study or reference behind each figure, and stop at the point where the honest answer is that the research has not been done.

The first page in the section is what a fever and a short illness do to protein balance, which separates flu-specific evidence from hospital and bed-rest research rather than blending the three into one number.

Nothing here is a treatment plan, a dose, or a recovery timetable. For what protein does before any of this starts, the practical side lives in the protein section.
